How to Win Friends and Influence People

Talking to a friend of mine at work, we reached the conclusion that human behavior is one of the most amazing subjects envolving relations. She told me she´s reading the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People", written by Dale Carnegie. The core principles of each section in the book are the following:
1. Fundamental Techniques in Handling People
2. Six Ways to Make People Like You
3. Twelve Ways to Win People to Your Way of Thinking
4. Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment
I obviously got very interested on it because it shows several ways we can act to reach our goals in a positive way, as a negotiation in which all the envolved wins something. That´s surely a book that should be studied.

My Preference

Hey there,

How is everyone doing? Its been  little while since my last post.

Today I will just leave some suggestions based on my preferences. Hope you all enjoy it.

Musical suggestion is the amazing musician John Mayer. His latest album called "Battle Studies" is probably the best album he has done since his master-piece (Continnum). All songs are reflections of failed relationships. My favorite songs in this album are "Perfectly Lonely" and "Edge of Desire". Great music with very elaborated lyrics.

My reading suggestion is Dan Brown's "Deception Point". It is just like any other Dan Brown's novel: an amazing thriller full of curiosities enriched by an outstanding research.

The importance of practicing English

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I learned a valuable lesson.

I contacted a good friend of mine and we decided to meet after 3 years without seeing each other. We were teammates in Chadron, NE and he is on his Mormon mission here in São Paulo.

It was way weird to hear him speaking Portuguese (perfectly by the way) since I always had in my mind Blake (his name : P) speaking English. We started off speaking Portuguese.

It didn´t take us long to switch to English. That was when I realized how important it is to keep practicing the language. I have been in Brazil for 13 days, and I didn´t feel my English flowing like it used to. I had to think too much to talk, and it made me feel less confident to let it out.

I know I´m not the smartest person alive (maybe the second?! haha), but I´m not the dumbest (hope not... ) either. I just know that even though I spent the last 5 years of my life speaking English daily, I will have to continuously work on it. Every single day.

With that being said, we should all be happy to be part of this blog. If we are not speaking English, at least we are exercising our reading abilities.We can use this tool in our benefit.

Hello everyone, Marco de Souza here!

I am extremely excited to become part of this blog. I love the idea of having a space to practice English and share points of view with different people.
Well, since this is an introduction, I will present myself and share a little bit of my background with everyone.
I was born and raised in São Paulo and started playing basketball at the age of 6. After playing basketball for 15 years I was awarded a scholarship to play ball and study in the United States. I spent the last 5 years living in the U.S. and it was the most rewarding experince of my life.
With "English Day at Work" I would like to share stories, thoughts, and help with some english questions people might have.
 I can't wait to get in touch with  the followers of this great blog.

Dear blogmates, estava neste final de semana pensando o que mais poderia fazer para tornar este blog não só útil mas também interessante de se ler e me veio uma idéia: criar novas postagens com tópicos interessantes onde todos podem comententá-los, em inglês, preferencialmente, ou português. Deste modo, estarão em contato com o idioma aprendendo novas palvaras e podendo de alguma forma se expressarem no idioma.

O tópico que escolhi para este primeiro dia é "Walk the Talk" onde descorrerá sobre o questão das pessoas estarem em linha com o discurso que pregam. Tenho certeza que já se depararam com chefias que pregram uma coisa, mas fazem outra. O que isto pode trazer de consequências para a empresa em que trabalha?

Pitfalls - Armadilhas da Língua Inglesa

Hi dear blogmates, este espaço do blog será para nós aprendermos que muitas palavras e frases que pensamos signifar algo em inglês, possuem um significado totalmente diferente. São as tais "armadilhas ou pitfalls". As dicas serão extraídas do livro: Pitfalls - 500 Armadilhas da Língua Inglesa do Prof. José Ricardo.

Vamos a um exemplo: TO HAVE A CHIP ON ONE'S SHOULDER. O sentido de cada palavra é facilmente reconhecível: to have = ter; a chip =  uma lasca (de madeira, por exemplo); on one's shoulder = no ombro. Portanto, se se diz he has a chip on his shoulder, entende-se que ele tem uma lasca no ombro, ou seja, um pedaço de madeira que caiu no ombro dele e ali ficou. Não é nada disso! HE HAS A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER quer dizer que ele é uma pessoa esquentada, tem pavio curto, é brigão. Mas pode significar ter uma bronca de alguém; provocar alguém; estar cismado com alguém.
